ART ROCKS 2008 SPONSORS

ACCESS FEDERAL CREDIT UNION

ACCESS Federal Credit Union was organized and founded in 1947 to provide financial services to the employees of Oneida Ltd. Silversmiths, the world’s largest manufacturer of stainless steel tableware. In 2000, we became a community Credit Union allowing us to serve everyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Oneida County or the City of Oneida.

Thomas L. Owens, President and CEO, a Clinton native, always hoped to expand services into his hometown. In April 2002, we opened an office in the (former) Jolly Butcher grocery store and occupied just half of the building located at 6 Franklin Ave. We initially shared the space with a bagel shop, and later, the restaurant Café DuMondé. In June of 2005, the relocation of our executive office from Sherrill, NY to the newly renovated Clinton location took place. Our Clinton office is now the home of our IT, Commercial Loan, Consumer Loan, and Collection Departments.

We currently serve our members from six locations: Clinton, Oneida, Sherrill, Camden, Rome, and Waterville, which opened in November 2007 at 110 E Main Street.

ACCESS Federal Credit Union: We will strive to exceed our members’ expectations!

ALTERI’S RESTAURANT

On Valentine’s Day 1953, John and Laura Alteri opened the doors to a family restaurant located on College Street in Clinton, New York. Thereafter it was known as Alteri’s Restaurant. It continued as a family business until John’s death in 1960. His son and daughter-in-law, Fernando “Feet” and Beverly, continued the family tradition up until 1998. Early morning, June 27, 1963 fire destroyed the restaurant, but not the spirit of it’s owner. The restaurant was rebuilt and expanded to what it is today. The family atmosphere of three generations is currently being carried on by Francis Alteri. We thank you for your patronage and look forward to serving you in the future.

DANE AND KATHLEEN AUSTIN

THE BURNS AGENCY

O. Gregory Burns, my grandfather, established our Agency in 1919. He was an attorney, who through the laws of the time was able to sell insurance and real estate as well as practice law.

Nicholas K. Burns, my father, entered the business in 1948. While in an apprenticeship to become an attorney, he acquired his real estate and insurance licenses. He found insurance and real estate more to his liking, so he pursued both diligently. In the late 1960s, he chose to focus entirely on insurance. In 1977 my brother Nick Jr. and I entered the Burns Agency. We continued as employees of my father until his death in July 1983.

In August of 1983, Nick Jr. and I set up a new corporation, N.K. Burns & Sons, Inc. DBA The Burns Agency so that new business could be written. We purchased my father’s business and incorporated it into our own in November 1984. In February 1998, my brother left the insurance business to follow his dream of being a publisher.

The Burns Agency looks forward to its 90th anniversary in 2009.

David J. Burns, Owner

CLINTON AGWAY

Clinton Agway is a mix of old and new: stocking lines of HARDWARE, HOME (bird, pet, lawn and garden), and FARM (feed & livestock) supplies.

Barbara and Chris Blatz have owned the business since December 1984. Until that time, it was a feed mill dating back to around 1837.

CLINTON COLLISION

Clinton Collision specializes in complete collision repair for autos and trucks, and light and heavy towing and recovery. Joseph Lomanto, who has been in the collision repair and towing profession for over 60 years, opened the shop in 1979. Located on McBride Avenue in Clinton, NY, we are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and serve the entire community. Our fleet of 3 large hydraulic wreckers, a medium hydraulic wrecker, a large flatbed and a service truck, handles towing recovery needs in the Northeast USA.

CLINTON GARDEN CLUB

Since its founding in 1934, the Clinton Garden Club has been an active participant in community affairs and meeting regularly at the Kirkland Library. Early projects included plantings at the Kirkland Town Library and the village green. For seventy-four years, the club has tended the shrubs and flowers as well as the colorful planters decorating the village sidewalks.

Over the years, the club has staged numerous events at many different venues: flower shows, garden tours, bus trips and lectures. The club hosted a flower show school, which began in 1986, and attracts prospective judges from all over New York State and beyond! Many of these efforts have been and are in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce, the Kirkland Art Center and other local groups.

Currently, the club’s projects include Garden Therapy at the Lutheran Home, provision of a DEC student scholarship, an environmental scholarship at Clinton High School and more. The popular “Plants Plus” sale, held in mid-May, features perennials dug from members’ gardens as well as annuals, planted baskets, decorative items and baked goods. Proceeds from this sale support the good work done by the club members.

Federated with the National Garden Clubs, Inc., the club also belongs to District Five of the New York State Garden Clubs and the Friends of Root Glen.

For more information contact the president, Josephine Murray at 853-3135.

CLINTON SHOE CENTER

Clinton Shoe Center has been part of the sole of the village since 1950 when it was first opened on North Park Row by M.A.Vona. In 1953 it moved to South Park Row, and then in 1971, Jack Lane bought the business and moved it back to North Park Row. In 1988 Jack purchased the 16 West Park Row building and relocated the business in its present location.

Built around 1850, the building became the home of the Scollard Opera House.

In those days, people used to go to the restaurant for dinner (now the bookstore) and walk (indoors) over the alley to the Opera House for plays and movies. In the 1930s the stage area was home to Garvey Movies and The Circle Theatre. In the 50s and 60s the building housed the Victory Grocery Store and the IGA store. In 1985 Jack Lane remodeled the second floor into apartments and the first floor has the China Sea restaurant and the Clinton Shoe Center today.

HAMILTON COLLEGE

Originally founded in 1793 as the Hamilton-Oneida Academy and rechartered in 1812 as the third oldest college in New York State, Hamilton occupies a 1,300-acre hilltop campus about 1.5 miles west of the Clinton Village Green.

The College provides its 1,775 students with an environment where they can find their voice. As a national leader for teaching students to write effectively, learn from each other and think for themselves, Hamilton produces graduates who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to make their own voices heard on issues of importance to them and their communities.

A key component of the Hamilton experience is the College’s open, yet rigorous liberal arts curriculum. In place of distribution requirements that are common at most colleges, Hamilton students are free to choose courses that reflect their unique interests and plans. Faculty advisors help students plan a coherent and highly individualized academic program — in fact, close student-faculty relationships at Hamilton are a distinguishing characteristic of the College — but ultimately students at Hamilton take responsibility for their own future.

Part of that future includes a lifelong relationship with the College. Hamilton alumni are exceptionally loyal and passionate supporters of their alma mater.

LISA M. LESTER DDS

Lisa M. Lester, DDS is a General Dentist practicing at 46 Utica Street. Lisa is a Clinton native who joined her father-in-law, William J. Gale's dental practice in 1997. Together they have "artfully" and painlessly repaired smiles in the Village of Clinton for more than forty years. In keeping with the family business, Lisa's husband Dan has joined the practice as a dental hygienist. Last year they built a new dental office at 46 Utica St. As fans of the Kirkland Arts Center and the arts, Lisa and Dan are proud to sponsor "Art Rocks." Please come visit!

MCHARRIS GIFTS

In 1956, Joseph and Ida McHarris established McHarris Gifts in Utica, New York. The business was run by their son, Basil and his wife, Ann until 1984, when Joe and Linda took over the operation.

In 1994, the Clinton store opened in the historic Allen building.

The McHarris family strives to source only the finest in gifts, cards, jewelry and decorative accessories. At a time when family run small retail shops are becoming scarcer, the McHarris Family continues to provide a glimpse of the way things used to be: full friendly service, unusual and unique products, and a shop where there is a true friendship with all of their customers. Stop in and meet the entire staff, including the fourth generation of the McHarris Family.

JOHN F. MENARD DDS PC

The dental office of Dr. John Menard has a long and interesting history. The practice was started in the early 1870s by Dr. John A. Beardsley, and it was located on Williams Street. He practiced there until 1910 at which time his nephew, Dr. J.N. Garlinghouse took over and ran his practice there for 35 years until his death in 1945. Dr. James L. Francis, a Remsen native, assumed the practice in 1946. Working alone until 1979, he was joined by Dr. Menard from nearby Ilion in 1979. In 1994, due to the need for additional space, they moved the practice to its present location here on East Park Row. Dr. Francis retired in 1998.

This dental practice, therefore, has been in continuous operation for over 130 years. The equipment and techniques have changed incredibly from the foot pedal drill in the 1880s, to the discovery of Novocain in the early part of the nineteenth century, to the high-speed drill in the 1950s and dental implants today. Our staff, old and new, is proud to have been “filling” the dental needs of local residents for several generations.

NESTER BROTHERS CONTRACTORS INC.

In 1908 John Nester was self employed doing jobs which required hand tools, horses and manpower. One such job was driving his horse and wagon to the Clinton O&W Railroad station to pick up building stone that had been shipped from Medina. He delivered it to Marvin Street for the construction of St Mary’s Church in 1909. Other such jobs he performed were the construction of the greens for the Yahnundasis Golf course in 1920 and the Valley View Golf course in 1922-23.

In 1926 Daniel W. and John T. joined their father in his business. In 1934 John Nester died. His sons formed Nester Brothers: John doing bookkeeping and landscaping, and Daniel doing estimating and manual labor.

In 1952 Daniel’s son, John E. (Jack) joined his father in the business, After Daniel’s passing, Jack and his wife Joyce continued to run Nester Brothers, enlisting their son John Jr to carry on as the fourth generation.

Jack has since retired and John Jr. runs this century old family business. The jobs are similar to the ones carried out in 1908, but the means are very different. Large equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers, trackhoes and dump trucks are used as well as good old fashioned manual labor.

This was written in The Courier about the late Matthew Turnock who established the Turnock Funeral Service in 1868. After Matthew died, his son Henry M. ANN AND DAVID SMALLEN

JOAN AND PHILIP STEWART

Joan and Philip Stewart, both renowned scholars of 18th-century French literature, came to Clinton five years ago when Joan was named the 19th president of Hamilton College. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Joan now enjoys Clinton’s small town charm and ambience. She even takes pleasure from the beauty and serenity of Upstate New York winters, despite spending her previous three decades in the Carolinas as a college teacher and administrator. Recently retired from Duke University, Philip is now seen frequently around the Village, especially at Tom’s Natural Foods, the Farmer’s Market and Hannaford’s, buying the ingredients necessary to prepare some of the French cui
sine for which he is famous.

THE ROOT FARM

The Root Farm is a center for equine-assisted therapies in Verona, NY that is guided by the belief that horses are a source of physical and psychological benefit for persons with disabilities or challenging life circumstances. The arm offers various programs for groups and individuals, including therapeutic vaulting, hippotherapy, adaptive riding and carriage driving as well as ground-based activities with horses, donkeys and mules

TOM’S NATURAL FOODS

In the early 1900s, 16 College Street was the home of The Livery, The Carriage Sleigh and Sign Painting Co., and Felix Stearn's Tack Shop. In 1972 Tom Bell opened Tom's Natural Foods and offered the community organic and local foods such as eggs, dairy, meat, and produce long before large supermarket chains made natural products fashionable.

Tom's Natural Foods is Clinton New York's oldest grocery store. Tom has watched generations pass through his door. First they were the children of the 60s, some of whom became the parents of the children of the 70s and 80s. Today these friends bring their grandchildren in to shop and visit.

Tom Bell would like to thank you for continuing to support a small, local, family owned business in an ever encroaching impersonal big business world.
